Although Nike is probably best known now for its line of basketball
shoes thanks to Michael Jordan, it is a little-known fact that
Nike actually got its start making running shoes.
These running shoes got their start in the 1970s with University
of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman. Bowerman was the coach for
the late, great Steve Prefontaine. Prefontaine was as close to
a rock star as a runner can get. Before his untimely death in
a traffic accident, he was one of America’s greatest distance
runners.
Before a big race, Bowerman made shoes for Prefontaine that actually
included the now infamous swoosh on the side of them. Bowerman
called them Nikes for the Greek Goddess of victory.
From these humble homemade beginnings, sprung the empire of Nike.
Nike running shoes are often worn by world champions. Regardless
of it is sprinting, marathon running or cross country running,
Nike makes a shoe for each of these disciplines.
Most runners consider Nike shoes to be at the top of the heap,
but that does not mean there is no competition. It also does not
mean that there have been no failures. During the Olympics a few
years ago, a U.S. sprinter’s Nike shoe sole actually came
apart during the race.
Even though Nike sells many different kinds of shoes for everything
from soccer to cricket, Nike running shoes started the whole revolution.
And, if things continue as they are now, it looks like Nike will
stay on the top for quite some time.
