New
runners hear in marketing messages and in chat rooms about running shoes
for heel strikers. But what is a heel striker? And why is the term important
to running?
A heel striker hits the ground harder with the heel of the foot rather
than the middle or the front of the foot. Running shoes for heel strikers
are supposed to help runners perform better by striking the ground with
the front of the foot.
However, critics of running shoes for heel strikers say that a shoe
in and of itself cannot make you a better athlete. While the shoes might
provide a way to build strength and efficiency over time, the runner
must also train to change his gate. Just as $100 basketball shoe cannot
make you dunk like Michael Jordan, $100 running shoe cannot make you
run like Carl Lewis. Still, the right shoe can contribute to a better
workout.
